My invite to DALL·E has arrived!
DALL·E is an AI system developed by OpenAI that can create original, realistic images and art from a short text description. DALL·E was trained by learning the relationship between images and the text used to describe them.
Design is where many people felt AI would struggle to compete with human creativity. However the reference material for the AI is the manmade connection between words and images.
Here's a few examples of the prompts and AI generated images from my first experiments with the software...
I managed to get access to the software on a sweltering day in Lincolnshire, and I was interested to find out how the AI would handle a Lincolnshire landscape. I don't want to make it too simple though, I could step outside in the sun and take a photo after all, so I prompted the AI to generate a giant ice cube melting into a feild in Lincolnshire with the sunrise in the background. I would say this one is a 10/10 perfect photorealistic giant ice cube melting into a field in Lincolnshire.
This next image I wanted to try create was a retro movie astronaut that you might have seen on an classic sci-fi poster, but reimagined in the popular synthwave aesthetic. Again, I'd have to say this is quite a perfect result.
Next up I wanted to try uploading an image instead of a text prompt. The AI then generates variations that can be continuously varied. I happened to already have a strange pattern I had generated from another AI system (starryai). This seemed the perfect challenge as the image I had was very low resolution. I was amazed by the result as it absolutely took the best qualities of the source image and made a far more visually interesting and detailed image. Take a look at the before and after:
This is really amazing technology. Undoubtedly, there are elements of so many other images included in these that have been learned and reinterpreted but the result can also be very unique. I am personally excited to see how I can use this technology commercially and I expect I will provide further updates on this in future. I hope you have also found it interesting.
